The disorder known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) occurs when the ovaries create an excessive amount of androgens, which are male sex hormones that are typically seen in trace amounts in women. The many tiny cysts (fluid-filled sacs) that develop in the ovaries are referred to as polycystic ovarian syndrome. However, whereas some women without the disease develop cysts, some women with this disorder do not. When an ovary releases a fully developed egg, ovulation takes place. This occurs in order for a male sperm to fertilise it. The egg is expelled from the body during your period if it is not fertilised. A woman may occasionally produce insufficient amounts of the hormones required for ovulation. The ovaries can develop in the absence of ovulation.
