The failure to become pregnant after a year of unprotected and unfettered sexual activity is known as infertility. The period is regarded as lasting for six months in women over 35. Secondary infertility is when a couple has already had children together but is currently unable to conceive. Primary infertility is when a couple has never had children. In men, testing begins with a semen analysis and, if necessary, hormonal assays (such as in cases of extremely low sperm counts). Ovulation in females is detected either at home using techniques like basal body temperature monitoring or cervical mucus tests, or in a medical facility using an ultrasound or blood tests. If ovulation is detected, investigations may be carried out to ensure normal uterine architecture and rule out tubal or uterine obstructions. Depending on your age, infertility is the inability to conceive after participating in frequent, unprotected sex for anywhere from six months to a year. Not every episode of infertility leads to "sterility"—the inability to ever have children—instead. About half of couples who get medical aid will eventually give birth to a child.
